HISTORY: Fandom Wikia
STRENGTHS: Due to everything Maya’s been through, she’s got compassion to spare now. She wants people to be their best and not suffer, so she generally finds way to help them (provided one of her flaws isn’t interfering). Her concern for others is from wanting someone to be there when she was at her weakest.
When it comes to her goals, she’s got passion. She’s bold and goes after what she wants. This mostly applies to desire to play and write music. But it applies to spending time with her friends and making sure her life is heading the direction she wants after… everything.
Finally she brings along a strange stillness to her. While she still has passion she’s lost a lot of her recklessness when she was younger. She doesn’t rush headlong into things without thinking anymore. Although the reasoning for this shift in her is- well, in her flaws section. This willingness to watch and wait is a positive in a few places.
FLAWS: Maya’s head is full of doubts about her place in the world. She wants to help but at the same time she isn’t sure how to help. Her depression and trauma tells her she can help by dying. That her presence makes the lives of others harder. And while she’s no longer suicidal… she is still very damaged.
Adding to that is a level of self-importance she views things that aren’t her fault as her fault. That not doing all the can means that the worst will not only happen, but be her fault. Somewhere along the lines of being a hero complex really. She hates feeling unable to do something, so she has to try and help (especially when she shouldn’t.
Finally, her doubts isolate her. She withdraws and doesn’t share her pain with others feeling she’s less deserving of support and help than others. That what she’s going through is less important than what her friends are dealing with. She can easily be bullied out of standing up for herself because other people are having bigger issues.
Canon Abilities: Maya's a perfectly normal teenager in canon. She's an expert musician with just about any stringed instrument. She's okay at school, and constantly butts in and tries to help others (to varying successes). But that's about it.

AU BACKSTORY: Maya's backstory runs more or less the same as canon. Except various events have more magical involvements than strictly being mundane happenstance.
Maya's powers manifested first around the age of thirteen, a part of her powers hid her from supernatural forces (including any seers who might look for candles to recruit). She could hear something malevolent around her sister but didn't really pay attention to it, she thought it was in her head.
The same sound she heard around her boyfriend, a few months later. He died of suicide, and when Maya went for therapy the sound she talked about was just called a trauma reaction, she was looking for something that wasn't there.
The following year it seemed to be lurking around a few people. That time Maya got close enough to each person that her radiance drove it off. More sure it's there but not sure what ‘it’ is. She tried researching, but the internet isn't really big on magical things being spelled out for people.
Her search, and a seer finally seeing something, did lead to some hunters showing up. They ended the Demon that'd taken up residence in the school. Other monsters that showed up, she couldn't fight them but she could get people away from them. Hide them from the darkness with her powers.
Her Junior year was relatively quiet until the end, Maya heard a different sound, dark and terrifying, before the bus she and her friends was on flipped end over end. As much as magic is to blame for many things, Maya's personal hunting down and trying to save people from the darkness did take a toll. There were things in the dark, there were monsters to fear, but she also had her own demon. She was depressed, so over the summer she fell deeper into her own darkness.
But some more hunters were sent out to handle the demon that attacked the bus, and finally someone saw Maya. Or, rather, didn't. The seer in the group couldn't see the girl lying on the ground having attempted suicide, while the more combat centered hunters were helping her. Maya's candle finally known. Once she was sure to survive, they explained what she'd been truly up against. And offered her a chance to learn her craft to really fight. And not just get lucky.
Not that Maya counted this luck.
(Overall this means her seasons that are ‘canon’ are still canon, just more things involved Maya people things from monsters that other flames/hunters took out. They just never figured out Maya's involvement based on her powers. Season 11+12 = Freshman year, 13+14 = Sophomore Year, Next Class 1+2 = Junior Year. Next Class 3 = Senior Year. She's repeating Senior Year after being in therapy long enough to be sure she was okay.)
AU PERSONALITY DEVIATION: Maya's pretty much the same but more recklessly sure she has to save people. Which is a problem in itself. Also knowing monsters exist has made her more protective of people than normal.
In spite of both of these, her guilt over those hurt around her. Bad things she didn't stop, still weigh on her. And she still feels responsible for those things happening, in part because her being a candle did draw more attention as some of the monsters she ran from were looking for her.
Basically her canon hero complex and her guilt over said complex are worse.
RACE: Human
SECRET SOCIETY: She manifested years before she was recruited to the school. Due to her powers hiding her from the sight of anyone looking for new candles in the world. She's otherwise unaffiliated with any society.
POWERS: Maya has two primary abilities in her Candle/Flame. Suppression and Hearing.
Maya's Suppression reduces the sound she produces, both physical and magical. Reducing her ‘magical’ sound makes her harder to notice with magical senses. She's fuzzy when seers look at her through an astral eye, or any power like that. Trying to hone in on her takes more focus. This doesn't protect her from other physical senses, and isn't as effective against supernatural senses of smell (taste, sight, etc). She can hide those near her, right now her limit is one, but it requires actual effort on her part and exhausts her after.
Reducing her physical sound just makes her very quiet, and she has to try to be heard. But otherwise her footsteps make no noise, and monsters can't hear her heartbeat or breathing.
Her Hearing allows her to hear people's spiritual presence or any sort of magic. They make specific noises in her head she can interpret into something else. Some magical illusions she can't hear through without focus, but most monsters and outworldly beings will sound wrong. This isn't a seer ability, she can't hear the future, but the distances she can hear magically can be extensive (usually with powerful big deal magic going on).
As an OOC thing it'll be an opt in/out on Maya's journal, for people to describe what Maya hears from them.

1. WHAT DO YOU MOST DESIRE FOR YOUR EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE?
“Um, in general or for the weird magic school thing? Cause if this wasn’t a freaky [Hogwarts] school I’d just say making friends and learning about other people. But I’d kinda like to be able to fight demons myself. And not just- know they exist? And barely be able to save people from them.”
2. WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE IN THE FUTURE?
“I still wanna go into music production, or maybe release my own single. Or tour?” Maya paused, “If I can I mean. I know that having powers kinda means you might not get to do everything you wanted.”

Maya looks down, this is mostly to herself, “Not having to bury any friends. I mean- I just want to make some friends and learn all I can? I don’t really care about anything else.”

“I don’t know how good your music program is yet, but if it’s really good I’m excited. Cause, even after everything, music is what I want most in life.” Maya fidgets, “Is that selfish? It sounded selfish. I need to also focus on the magical coursework to help me protect others. Not just- hear monsters and be helpless.”

“Working entirely in French kinda makes lit work annoying. And, like, I still hate gym.”

“I hope I can start a band? Like, alternative or rock, something really unique and weird. Not- magic weird, but just not mainstream? I wanna get noticed if I can. Still.” She scoffs after she realized she said ‘noticed.’

“I try to write music? And, like-” Maya looks a little shifty, “I don’t like having free time. I’m really bad with it.”

Maya considers all the people to let her down or betray her, “Relying on others isn’t easy for me. Even people that sound okay can let you down. If they’re good at hiding who they are. But- sometimes they just need you to try first?”
